Beekeeping

We source our honey from more than 5 000 of our own hives across Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Orange Free State, relying on Apis mellifera Scutellata, the African Honey Bee for most of our honey

Honey is extracted from the full hives using a centrifugal honey extractor before being tapped into large setting tanks and allowed to clarify.

The honey is then tapped into large barrels and sent to the Peel’s factory for packaging.

Meet our Our Team

Craig first became interested in apiculture after spending time with his brother-in-law who kept bees as a hobby. Starting out with one hive in 1992, Craig soon grew his apiary to 400 hives and went into beekeeping full-time.

He now manages more than 5 000 hives across Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State under the Peel’s label, each with between 20 000 and 100 000 bees, Craig’s bees can produce up to 50 tonnes of honey a year.
Craig’s beekeeping team and his bees officially joined the Peel’s family in 2016, providing a critical enabler of our business.

We are reviving our tradition of sourcing honey from smaller beekeepers. If you are a beekeeper looking to sell your honey, please contact us!
